Reflection: mirror the scene in still water

What it is

Still water, wet sand or glass can mirror a scene so the picture has two halves: the world above and its reflection below. Putting the waterline across the middle makes the halves equal and the symmetry obvious, which feels calm and balanced. It works best on windless days, early or late, when the water is flat. A level waterline is essential, because a tilt is far more noticeable when the frame is mirrored. Reflection is part of Camera Grid Pro.

How to shoot it

Find still water with the scene reflected across most of its width, and stand at eye level. A 0.5× to 1.5× zoom keeps the whole reflection in.

Common mistakes

Putting the waterline off centre, which weakens the mirror effect.

Questions

How do you photograph reflections in water?

Go when the air is still, usually early morning or evening, and get lower to the water to catch more of the reflection. Put the waterline in the middle for a full mirror and keep it perfectly level. Camera Grid draws the waterline and scores how level and centred it is.

Should the horizon be in the middle for reflections?

Usually, yes. Reflections are the classic exception to the rule of thirds, because centring the waterline lets the two halves mirror each other. If the reflection is weak or the sky is dull, a horizon on a third can still work better.
