Leading Lines: guide the eye to your subject

A path, a rail, a shoreline: lines that carry the eye in to the subject, with no single vanishing point.

What it is

Leading lines are paths, rails, fences, shorelines or rows of anything that carry the eye through the picture toward the subject. We follow lines almost automatically, so a line that starts near the front of the frame and ends at the subject does the viewer's work for them. The lines can converge, curve or run in from a corner; what matters is where they end. A small subject at their destination, placed on a third, gives the journey a point.

When to use it

A path or a pier leading to a person or a bench
Railway tracks or a fence running to a building
A shoreline or a wall guiding the eye to a lighthouse

How to shoot it

Find lines that run through the scene toward a small subject, and stand where they start near the front of the frame, at eye level. A 0.5× to 1.5× zoom stretches them.

Common mistakes

Letting the lines lead out of the frame or into empty space with no subject at the end.
Making the subject so large that it hides where the lines converge.
Standing so the lines run across the frame instead of into it.

What are leading lines in photography?

Leading lines are lines within a scene, such as roads, fences, rivers or the edges of buildings, that draw the viewer's eye toward the main subject. They add depth and direction and tell the viewer where to look first. They can be straight, curved or broken into a row of objects.

Is a corridor with a vanishing point a leading-lines photo?

Often, but Camera Grid treats it separately. When lines meet at one strong point inside the frame, that is One-Point Perspective, and the point goes in the centre. Leading Lines is for lines that lead to a subject without a single vanishing point.
